Four Important Tips to Keep Your Computer Safe

Living in the information age, keeping your computer safe can become more and more difficult over time. New viruses and threats are constantly sidling through on the internet, and it can be overwhelming to manage at times, especially for those who are still learning how to navigate their machines. Scott Yandell, an IT specialist and telecom engineer based in St. Johns, Florida, is committed to helping families secure and protect their information. He recommends the following tips to be certain that you are staying safe on the internet.

1. Be cautious. If you wander onto a website that doesn’t look legitimate, leave immediately. If you receive an email with unknown attachments, don’t open them. Avoid links in emails that don’t come from a trusted source, and don’t install software before getting more information.

2. Make sure that you are using a firewall. Firewalls block harmful data that can cause your machine numerous problems. If you access the internet through a router, you already have a firewall in place that will protect you from external network-based threats.

3. Be aware of who is near your computer. If someone can see you type in your password or knows you well enough to guess your passwords to steal your information, your sensitive information can easily be exploited.

4. Backup absolutely everything of value. This action is an extra step that must be taken to ensure that your information is accessible in the case of your machine breaking irreparably or being stolen. Knowing that you have another way to access your information should the unknown occur will put your mind at ease because you’re protected and prepared.
